Tayrona Park was discovered in 1964, and five years later, in 1969, 15,000 hectares of land and 4,500 hectares of marine area were designated as a natural park due to their high biological and archaeological value. This recognition allowed for the protection and preservation of one of the richest and most varied ecosystems in Colombia, as well as its important historical remains.

Before the arrival of Spanish conquerors, the region that today comprises Tayrona Park was inhabited by the Tayrona indigenous people. This group established their communities in locations such as Pueblito Chairama, whose archaeological remains can still be found in the area. These ruins are a testament to the advanced civilization that inhabited the region from pre-Columbian times well into the colonial period in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Currently, Tayrona Park is not inhabited by any of the four indigenous ethnic groups that reside in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta: the Kogui, Arhuaco, Wiwa, and Kankuamo. These communities have chosen to settle in the higher areas of the Sierra due to the increasing flow of external visitors, whom they refer to as "younger brothers." However, Tayrona Park remains part of their ancestral territory and is home to several sacred places where indigenous people have practiced their rites and ceremonies for centuries.

The cultural and spiritual importance of these sacred sites is immeasurable, and their protection is vital to preserve the cultural heritage of humanity. The rites and ceremonies performed in the park reflect a deep connection with nature and the cosmos, fundamental aspects of the worldview of these indigenous communities.

The coexistence of its rich and varied ecosystems with the archaeological remains of ancient civilizations makes it a unique and essential destination for those who wish to learn more about the history and heritage of Colombia.

We invite you to explore and respect this wonderful park, recognizing its value not only as a natural sanctuary but also as a sacred and culturally significant space.
